Core Position Descriptions

The core trainees would complete 3 monthly rotations between the inpatient and outpatient services. The inpatient service involves attending to inpatients, attend to referrals from the emergency department, stroke codes and supervising the basic physician trainee led teams. The outpatient service includes attending the outpatient clinics as detailed below and in patient consults. By this way, the trainees would complete a total of 6 months in, inpatient and outpatient care.
The period of core training is also utilized to gain experience as being the first – on call – person for neurological admissions which is considered quite advantageous, when stepping up as a career neurologist in the future. The trainees would hence be trained to be first on call in a few selected weekends under the supervision of the on – call neurologist. This will be paid as per the standard NSW health roster guidelines.

Hospital Information

Nepean hospital is the tertiary care hospital for NBMLHD with over 550 beds. The neurology department not only cater to the Nepean hospital but to the other hospitals within the LHD; Blue Mountain District Hospital, Lithgow hospital and Hawkesbury District Hospital, by telephone consultations via a central HUB service, if required. The hospital services a large metropolitan region, understandably providing the trainees with vast experience in many neurological subspecialties. As well as providing consultation services to the other specialties, we closely work with ICU via the telemetry EEG service to critically unwell patients, if indicated. To provide a broad spectrum of exposure to neurology in a department with a variety of subspecialty interests. Training at Nepean Hospital provides exposure to various neurological procedures to improve skills. We encourage research and a dedicated neurologist would be supervising the projects. Further, as we have now accepted participation in clinical trials, it would be a valuable opportunity to receive such experience, as clinical trials are a much-needed requirement in practicing neurology due to its complexities.
