Accreditation of Neurophysiology Training

Level 1 Training

Level 1 training in EEG and NCS/EMG is part of core neurology training, governed by the RACP, and does not require separate accreditation. The expectations of Level 1 training are included in the Requirements for Training in Clinical Neurophysiology documents below, for reference.

Level 2 and 3 EEG and NCS/EMG Training

Additional accreditation of training is required to be recognised as Level 2 or 3 in EEG and/or NCS/EMG. This includes accreditation of the training site prior to the training and of the trainee after the period of training.

Sites seeking to be accredited to deliver Level 2 or 3 neurophysiology training should refer to Site Accreditation for more information on how to apply.

Please note these requirements have been updated and will apply to all training completed after 31 January 2025.

For trainees completing their training prior to 31 January 2025, the previous standard will apply. Some additional training for pre-2025 trainees may be recommended prior to accreditation if training is deemed insufficient, even where case numbers have been met.

It is strongly recommended that you read the Requirements for Training in Clinical Neurophysiology for EEG and/or NCS/EMG in full before you commence your neurophysiology training and again before you submit your application.

A summary of the changes can be found here.

How to apply for recognition of Level 2 or 3 Training

All applicants, including those who completed training prior to 31 January 2025, should use the updated forms below for their application and must ensure all required attachments are included. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Applications for recognition of training must be submitted within 12 months of completing training.

Trainee applications for recognition of Level 2 or 3 training will be processed twice yearly. Applications must be submitted to the Executive staff at the ANZAN Office (eeg.emg@anzan.org.au) no later than 10th March or 10th September each year. An outcome of your application will be received within 60 days of the assessment meeting. Where additional training is required to meet the standard, this will be provided in writing with specific information on what is required prior to resubmission.

Special circumstances

Retrospective (‘grandfather’) accreditation of Level 2 or 3 training for existing fellows who completed their neurophysiology training prior to the introduction of either standard (i.e. pre-2016) closed on 31 August 2025. If you require additional information about this, please contact eeg.emg@anzan.org.au.

Accreditation of neurophysiology training completed between 2016 and 2024 will not be accepted after 1 May 2026. Applicants must submit their application using the updated forms below and must ensure all attachments are included. If you are seeking accreditation for training which was completed more than 3 years ago, you must also include evidence of ongoing clinical neurophysiology practice relevant to the level and type applied for (i.e. weekly study numbers, case mix/complexity). Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Overseas trained physicians wishing to seek Level 2 or 3 EEG or NCS/EMG accreditation may apply anytime within two years of being recognised as a neurologist in Australia or Aotearoa/New Zealand. See the relevant criteria above for further details on the standard and how to apply.
