Core Position Descriptions
Our Core Trainee supervises one of two Neurology Teams: each team comprises of a Neurology BPT and a JMO. They will receive weekly consultant-led clinical and neurophysiological teaching. Career development and the potential for research will be encouraged. Flexibility in terms of working hours is worth discussing with us at the outset. Feedback from our ATs is encouraged and welcomed.

Elective Position Descriptions
Our Elective Trainees (6 months Neurology and 6 months General Medicine) will each spend 6 months with our Department. They will receive weekly consultant-led clinical tutorials. Career development and the potential for research will be encouraged. Flexibility in terms of working hours is worth discussing with us at the outset. As above, feedback is encouraged and welcomed.

A new Fellow in Stroke/Neurophysiology AT position will join us in February 2019.

Hospital Information

The Wollongong Hospital is a 600-bed tertiary referral centre and the largest hospital within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District. Wollongong Hospital is the largest of Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District’s nine hospitals, treating more than 47,000 patients annually. It is the region’s tertiary referral hospital which means it has the capacity to treat specialist and complex cases.

Wollongong’s Emergency Department is one of the busiest in New South Wales with around 50,000 presentations each year and the Illawarra Regional Cancer Care Centre is the largest of it kind of the South Coast.

The Hospital is closely affiliated with the University of Wollongong and the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute. An academic suite located at Wollongong Hospital supports both the Graduate School of Medicine and the hospital Research Department.

Wollongong Hospital recently completed $100 million worth of capital works enhancements. Excellent 3T MRI and PET imaging facilities are readily accessible by both inpatients and outpatients.

Philosophy Of Training
Our objective is to attract keen Neurology Advanced Trainees who wish to work in a trainee-focussed environment. At the conclusion of their 12 month training with us at Wollongong, each AT will have had exposure to the following:

- A wide variety of Neurological inpatients
- General Neurology outpatient clinics
- Botulinum Toxin clinic
- Read and perform NCS & EMG
- Read and report EEGs
- Thrombolysis administration
- Research training on-site

You will have the opportunity to learn about research methods during your time with us. Opportunities to co-author journal articles will also arise.

Given our focus on education, training and research at Wollongong Hospital, we are keen to explore with our Advanced Trainees whether they would like to stay on with us, in conjunction with the University of Wollongong, as research candidates (e.g. MPhil or PhD). Our hospital's Director of Research is keen to facilitate keen prospective research candidates. Please contact us to discuss.
