Core Position Descriptions
We have 5 registrars, 3 of which are accredited as core training positions. The registrars rotate through four rotations throughout the year; general neurology, stroke, acute neurology and clinics/consults. We have a very strong neurophysiology unit co-located with the ward, and run 4 NCS/EMG clinics and one botox clinic per week which advanced trainees are encouraged to attend. In addition, we have very strong epilepsy/EEG unit with 2 inpatient monitoring beds, 2 outpatient monitoring beds, ambulatory EEG, 2 epilepsy clinics/week and a first seizure clinic, with weekly EEG teaching. In addition, we have a number of general neurology clinics (3 per week), stroke clinics (2 per week), MS clinic, neuromuscular clinics, motor neurone disease clinics, movement disorder clinics and a neuropsychiatry clinic. We have a strong commitment to teaching and training our registrars. There is also a registrar after-hours on-call.

Hospital Information

The neurology unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient neurology services to our local community, as well as supporting the greater Southwest of Western Australia. We have a 12 bed acute stroke unit, 2 inpatient EEG monitoring beds and 8 inpatient general neurology beds. We run sub-speciality clinics in the areas of neuromuscular disorders, movement disorders, Neuro-immunology, stroke and epilepsy. In addition, we have a strong neurophysiology department co-located with the inpatient ward. We are a dynamic unit with 13 consultant neurologists, with a mix of youth and experience, for whom teaching and training are a priority. We are all committed to building up a world class clinical and research unit, and have access to state-of-the-art infrastructure.

We currently are staffed with 4 neurology registrars, and are accredited for 3 neurology advanced trainee core positions. The registrars are exposed to a number of general and sub-specialist outpatient clinics per week. In addition, we have a very strong neurophysiology department in both EEG and nerve-conduction studies which form a vital component of neurology advanced training.

Junior Staff Positions In Neurology

Trainee Responsibilities
Role: To support the neurology consultants in providing the best possible care for neurology inpatients and outpatients. In addition, they are required to accept this as a training position, and therefore there will be a major learning component to this term.
Responsibilities:
1. Daily ward rounds on inpatients
2. Timely review of ward/AMU/ED consultations
3. Timely review of ward patients when requested by nursing staff
4. Attendance at outpatient clinics
5. Participation in Neurophysiology clinics
6. Liaise with your consultants at regular intervals
7. Attend departmental meetings
8. Present cases at departmental and inter-departmental meetings
9. Participate in an after-hours on-call roster
10. Involvement in research projects and/or clinical trials whenever possible
11. Supervision of RMO’s/Interns in the department of neurology
12. Full participation in ward/board meetings as part of the multi-disciplinary neurology service, involving medical, allied and nursing staff.

Learning objectives:
1. Ability to complete a full neurological history and examination
2. Ability to correctly localise the level of the pathology
3. Provide a reasonable differential of the likely pathology
4. Order the correct diagnostic tests
5. Management of common neurological conditions
6. Procedures including lumbar punctures and neurophysiological tests
7. Interpretation of neurological investigations, including reading MRI scans, EEG’s and NCS

Hospital Information

Royal Perth Hospital is a 955 adult bed teaching hospital with approximately 70,000 admissions per year. It is associated with the University of Western Australia, and is one of three teaching hospitals in Western Australia.
The department has major sub-specialties commitments to epilepsy, clinical neurophysiology, movement disorders, stroke, neurological rehabilitation and neurogenetic.
Royal Perth Hospital is the state adult epilepsy centre, and the state centre for adult neurogenetic.
The department provides a comprehensive neurophysiology service which includes diagnostic studies, movement disorders programme and intra-operative neural monitoring for spinal surgery, and posterior fossa surgery. Royal Perth Hospital is the state centre for interventional-neuroradiology, scoliosis surgery and spinal care.

Hospital Information

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is a progressive, fully accredited teaching hospital located on a 28 hectare medical campus adjacent to King's Park in Nedlands, the University of WA and is 4 kilometres from the central business district of Perth.

Clinical services are provided via a devolved management structure encompassing six Clinical Service Units. All clinical specialties are available, with the exception of complex burns, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology. The hospital has a distinguished record in patient care, teaching and research and is closely associated with the nearby University of Western Australia as well as Curtin and Edith Cowan Universities.

Each year the hospital treats approximately 63,000 inpatients, 40,000 emergency presentations and 300,000 outpatients. There are currently 581 beds available, 88 of which are day patient beds. An additional 20 general medical beds are also currently available at Osborne Park Hospital and a 22 bed Care Awaiting Placement Unit is located in the grounds of Hollywood Private Hospital. The hospital employs approximately 2,700 full-time equivalent staff.

There are three registrar positions in the Neurology Department up to 2 of which may be for Advanced training within the Department. Registrars rotate between clinical teams every two months to ensure an opportunity for training from attending neurologists.
